According to reports, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is considering two of their star players, Shardul Thakur and Sunil Narine, for the captaincy of the team for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.

Shardul Thakur, who is currently part of the Indian national team, has been a consistent performer for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the past few seasons, while Narine has been one of the most successful spinners in the IPL. Both players have the experience and leadership skills to lead the team to success. It remains to be seen who will be chosen as the captain for the KKR team for the 2023 season.

The Kolkata Knight Riders are planning to name a new captain for the IPL 2023 in the coming days because Shreyas Iyer’s catastrophic back injury has all but guaranteed that he won’t play in the tournament.

According to TOI, the role may go to either experienced West Indies spin bowling all-rounder Sunil Narine or India’s Shardul Thakur, who has excelled for the team since he joined them in 2012.

“Within a day or two, KKR is set to make the announcement of their new captain in a grand function, with their owner, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and an overseas pop star set to light up the occasion,” a source told TOI.

The new KKR skipper must attend the IPL captains’ meeting on March 30 in Ahmedabad. On April 1, KKR will play their first match against Punjab Kings in Mohali.

Kolkata Knight Riders acquire Shardul Thakur from Delhi Capitals:

According to reports, Shardul Thakur, who was traded by the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2023 (they bought him for Rs 10.75 crore for IPL 2022), has an advantage over Narine because the Mumbaikar is likely to connect better with the Indian players at KKR.

The pacer finished the 2022 season of the league with 15 wickets in 14 matches and an economy rate of 9.79. These are among his weakest bowling statistics ever since Shardul Thakur became a regular in the league back in 2017. With the bat, he scored 120 runs at a strike rate of around 138.

What could also work against Narine is his terrible captaincy performance with the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the maiden season of the ILT20 in the UAE, when the squad posted just one win and eight defeats to finish last in the six-team league.
