IPL 2023: "That’s A Huge Amount Of Money, Particularly For A Foreign Player" - Tom Moody Backs SRH's Decision To Release Kane Williamson

With the T20 World Cup over, the focus has shifted to the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League’s mini-auction, which is scheduled to take place on December 23rd in Kochi. Ahead of the mini-auction, all the teams have revealed which players they have retained and released for the next edition of the IPL.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad released 12 players on Tuesday, including Kane Williamson. The 32-year-old was retained by the franchise ahead of last year’s mega auction for INR 14 crore, while big players like David Warner and Rashid Khan were let go. Hyderabad appointed Williamson as their captain ahead of the IPL 2022 season, but he had a horrible season, scoring only 216 runs at a poor strike rate of 93.51.

14 Crore Huge Amount Of Money, Particularly For A Foreign Player – Tom Moody

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Tom Moody explained why the management decided to release captain Kane Williamson ahead of the IPL 2023 auction. Speaking to Star Sports, Tom Moody revealed why the SRH franchise made the difficult but right decision to release New Zealand’s all-format captain.

“I totally get the decision on the basis of the 14 crore, that’s a huge amount of money, particularly for a foreign player. For an Indian player? Certainly not. And we have always got to look at that kind of relationship between the supply and demand of your overseas players against the supply and demand of your high quality Indian players. And you’re always going to have to pay, and quite rightly so, pay big money for your top Indian players.”

Kane Williamson Is One Of The Games Great Modern Leaders – Tom Moody

Tom Moody was a member of the SRH old team management that retained Williamson ahead of last year’s mega auction. He believed that, despite Williamson’s injury problems, he was still a “significant pillar” around whom the old management wanted to build a new team.

“Yeah, it’s going to be very interesting to see what the new management does at Sunrisers with regards to Kane, because you make a big decision to begin with in retaining a player like Kane Williamson. At the beginning of a major auction, you back him as your leader, everyone recognises that he’s one of the games great modern leaders. Yes, he had a poor season, yes, he had injury problems over the last 12 months. But it’s clear they have made a decision to change such a significant pillar in what their future was going to look like when they first sat down before the big auction.”

SunRisers Hyderabad will enter the mini-auctions with the highest purse of the ten teams, Rs 42.25 crores, after releasing superstars like Kane Williamson and Nicholas Pooran.
