Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced that Nitish Rana will lead the side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is recovering from his back injury, in IPL 2023. Nitish Rana has been a part of KKR since 2018, he had a decent IPL 2022 where he scored 361 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 143.82 & an average of 27.76.

Nitish Rana has had a fair amount of experience of leading the Delhi side in the domestic circuit. In the absence of Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Rana will have to bat responsibly and now it won’t be a surprise if Sunil Narine bats up the order in place of Shreyas Iyer where he can play a breezy knock for the team.

KKR took to their social media to announce the appointment of Nitish Rana as the skipper. The statement also pointed out that Nitish Rana will get ample help from head coach Chandrakant Patil & support staff. KKR are quite hopeful that Shreyas Iyer would be available for the latter half of the tournament.

Kolkata Knight Riders today announced that Nitish Rana would captain the side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is recovering from a back injury. While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover & participate at some stage in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball & the IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job.

“We are also confident that under Head Coach Chandrakant Patil and the support staff, he will get all the support needed off the field, and the highly experienced leaders in the squad will provide all support that Nitish may need on the field. We wish him the best in his new role and Shreyas a full and speedy recovery,” said the statement.

There were some reports which stated that Andre Russell or Shakib al Hasan would lead the side as they have ample experience of leading the side in the franchise circuit. KKR fans would be hoping that Nitish Rana ends the drought of 8 years as KKR are yet to win IPL since 2014 when they won under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.

KKR management needs to stick to one combination rather than chopping & changing as we had seen in IPL 2022, how it affected the team’s dynamics. KKR are set to lock horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) on 1st April which promises to be an exciting contest as both the teams have new skippers (*PBKS have appointed Shikhar Dhawan as the captain).
