Steve Smith has added to the buzz surrounding the IPL 2023 by hinting at a return to the league. However, he has not disclosed the capacity in which he will return to India, having not been a part of the mini-auction that took place in Kochi in December 2022. On March 27, Smith took to social media to announce that he would be joining an “exciting and passionate” team for the IPL.
Although there has been speculation about his return, it remains unclear whether he will play in the upcoming IPL 2023 season, particularly as several teams are seeking last-minute replacements for injured players. Steve Smith has represented six IPL franchises in the past, but has not played in the league since the 2021 season. After going unsold in the IPL 2022 auction, the Australia vice-captain withdrew from the auction ahead of the 2023 season.

There is speculation that Smith may make his commentary debut in the IPL in India. As different firms have acquired broadcast and digital rights for the upcoming 2023 season, there is a competition to secure the best analysts and commentators. However, it is uncertain how Smith will manage his commitments as he is set to play three first-class matches for Sussex in the County Championship season in May.
Steve Smith’s captaincy during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the subsequent ODI series against India earlier in February and March received praise. Australia, under Smith’s leadership, won the ODI series 2-1, breaking India’s four-year unbeaten streak in the 50-over format at home.
