Ex-South Africa explosive batter AB de Villiers recently commented on the possibility of him making a return for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2023, says that the team is so good that he might not get a chance to play.

de Villiers played his last international match for SA in 2018 but continued playing for RCB till 2021. One of the greatest players of his generation, the South African is also one of the most popular players for the Bengaluru-based franchise.

In the ‘RCB Unbox’ event held on Sunday, March 26, AB and fellow RCB alumnus Chris Gaye were inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.

During the event, when asked about making a potential return for RCB in IPL 2023, Gayle said that he would love that and that “he is ready.” AB de Villiers, on the other hand, claimed that the team is “too good” this year and that he might not make it to the squad even if he wanted to.

“I think the team is too good at the moment. We won’t get a chance in the starting XI. We would rather be fans and support the boys to bring the Trophy back home. Ee Saala Cup Namde (This year, the trophy is ours),” said de Villiers

AB de Villiers has played 156 matches for RCB between 2011 and 2021, scoring 4491 runs and 2 centuries in that time. He is one of the highest-scoring foreign players in tournament history.

Multiple RCB stars likely to miss the first half of IPL 2023

It has been reported that RCB stars Rajat Patidar and Josh Hazelwood have been ruled out of the first half of IPL 2023.

Patidar, who recently suffered an ankle injury, was RCB’s 3rd highest run-scorer in the 2022 season and played a big role in the team making it to the playoffs. He will soon undergo an MRI which will determine his availability for the second half of the tournament.

Hazelwood, on the other hand, flew home amidst the Border-Gavaskar trophy earlier this year due to a non-specific injury. He is now undergoing treatment for this injury and will miss the first half of the tournament.

As if the blows weren’t enough, English all-rounder Will Jacks has been ruled out of the tournament completely.

Amidst the injury crisis, it is upon top stars like Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and Mohammed Siraj to steer the RCB ship into the playoffs in IPL 2023.
