With a few days to go before the start of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Delhi Capitals reportedly announced the replacement player for kipper Rishabh Pant. Bengal’s wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel is likely to replace Rishabh Pant for the upcoming edition of the world’s best T20 franchise league.
The Delhi-based franchise suffered a major setback when Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the upcoming edition of the tournament due to injuries sustained in a car accident in December last year. The veteran opening batter David Warner was named the captain of the franchise, with all-rounder Axar Patel serving as his deputy.

The Capitals lack Indian wicketkeeper backups in their line-up. However, Sarfaraz Khan has kept wickets a few times for his domestic team, Mumbai. The English opening batter Philips Salt can keep stumps, but they don’t have an overseas slot available to include him in the playing XI with David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Rovman Powell, and Anrich Nortje as their first choices.
Abhishek Porel is a left-handed wicketkeeper from Bengal and has played 16 first-class matches, three List A games, and three T20s. The 20-year-old, who made his debut in domestic cricket last season, is not a proven cricketer. However, he is likely to get more opportunities to establish himself this season, as the Capitals need the wicketkeeper batter in their lineup.

The Delhi Capitals are one of a few teams that have competed in every season of the IPL but have never won the trophy. They came closer to winning the trophy in IPL 2020 under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer but fell short in the title hunt. The David Warner-led team will start their campaign in the tournament against the Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on Saturday, April 1.
