The veteran Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav believes that the Indian Premier League (IPL) will provide a platform for his comeback into the Indian white-ball setup. Umesh Yadav said that the ODI World Cup 2023, which will be held at home later this year, is the last chance to play the marquee event.

Umesh Yadav isn’t part of the Indian ODI setup, having played his last match in the 50-over format against the West Indies in 2018. The right-arm pacer represented India in the 2015 World Cup in Australia. The Vidarbha pacer performed well in the tournament and took 18 wickets to help the team reach the semi-final match.

I Want To Make This Season Count – Umesh Yadav

In an exclusive interview with Aaj Tak, Umesh Yadav said that he wants to be a part of the World Cup squad and that this is his last chance because the mega event only happens once every four years.

“The ODI World Cup is played after every four years and this can be my last opportunity to be a part of it. So I need to do well in IPL and make a comeback in ODI format,” Umesh told Aaj Tak in an interview.

“As I said the World Cup comes after every four years and I’m not sure if I’ll be around then. Hence I want to make this season count and not wait for another four years,” he added.

The 35-year-old was recalled to the Indian T20I squad ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup when Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the series against Australia and South Africa due to COVID-19. However, he represented India in only one match, where he picked up one wicket for 34 runs in his three overs. The team management decided to move on from the pacer following the World Cup.

Umesh Yadav is part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He performed well in the last season as he took 16 wickets in 12 matches with an economy rate of 7.06. The KKR will face the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Punjab Cricket Association’s IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, on Saturday, April 1.
