Mumbai Indians’ newly-appointed head coach Mark Boucher stated on March 29 that the 5-time champions are open to resting Rohit Sharma for “one or two games” in the IPL 2023 season if it makes him fresher and more hungry for more.
Resting players to keep them fresh and motivated is a common strategy in many sports. It will be interesting to see if Mumbai Indians indeed decide to rest Rohit Sharma for a game or two during the IPL 2023 season.

The Mumbai Indians will be looking for a turnaround after finishing last in the 10-team IPL last year. With the Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2023 season kicking off on April 2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the attention will be on the workload management of the players, particularly Rohit, who will lead India in the 50-over World Cup later this year in October-November.
When asked if he was willing to sit out a few IPL games during the league round, Sharma chose to have the matter answered by former South African wicketkeeper and coach Boucher.
“In terms of me resting, I think Mark (Boucher) will give you an answer to that,” he said. To this, the team’s coach Boucher added: “Do you want to rest?
“In regards to resting Rohit, he is the captain. Hopefully, he gets into some good sort of form and I hope he doesn’t want to rest. But yeah, we all adapt to different situations. If I can get the best out of him as a captain and player, that will be great. If it means he wants to rest 1 or 2 games, then I will do that. No problem” Mark Boucher said.

“I just want the whole season to get underway now”- Mark Boucher
Mark Boucher took over as head coach of the Mumbai-based squad ahead of this year’s cash-rich tournament, succeeding Mahela Jayawardene. The former South African keeper went on to say that while he was initially worried, he is optimistic about the team’s chances, explaining:
“I must admit, I’m a little bit nervous. I think before anything new in life, you do get a little bit nervous. I’m quietly confident. I’ve seen a lot of the youth at Mumbai Indians. I came here with the scouts and we had a look at all the training sessions. So, very confident, but a little bit nervous. I just want the whole season to get underway now” Mark Boucher said In a video shared by the franchise on social media.
The Rohit Sharma-led team will kick off their IPL 2023 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday, April 2 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.
