Virat Kohli recently admitted that he was under so much pressure during India’s match against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup, that he had completely shut off his mind midway through. This to the point that he did not hear anything coach Rahul Dravid told him.

Virat Kohli is currently with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), in the 2023 season of IPL.

India kicked off their 2022 T20 World Cup campaign against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). After restricting the neighbors at 159 in their 20 overs, the Men in Blue were in trouble at 31/4. What followed is one of the most spectacular chases and arguably Kohli’s most iconic innings ever. India would go on to win the match on the last ball in an absolute thriller.

Discussing the chase at a recent PUMA event, Virat revealed that he shut his mind off at some point during the chase.

“I still can’t make any sense of it. That’s a very honest admission. And a lot of people have tried to ask me what were you thinking, how did you plan and I have no answers. The fact of the matter is that I was so much under pressure that my mind had shut off completely by the 12th or 13th over.”

Virat Kohli was so focused on the task at hand, that he accidentally ignored coach Rahul Dravid’s advice.

At the 10th over mark, we were 31 for 4 and I had just ran Axar out. I was 12 off 25, or something. I remember in the break, Rahul bhai came to me and I don’t remember what he said. I swear and I even told him this as well. I told him, ‘I have no idea what you told me in that break because I was zoned out’,” he said.

Virat Kohli claims that some higher was guiding him that night against Pakistan

Describing how the enormity of an India/Pakistan match had even a player of his caliber under pressure, Virat Kohli explained how when the going got tough, he let his instincts take over.

“There is no comeback from here and that was my honest feeling at the halfway mark. That is when my instinct took over. So when I stopped thinking and planning, whatever God-given talent I have came to the surface and then I felt like something higher was guiding me.”

Ever since that innings, Virat Kohli seems to found his form, scoring centuries in ODIs and Test matches.

The 34-year-old will represent RCB for the 15th straight year in a row as they kick off their IPL 2023 season against Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 2.
