Jofra Archer, with his exceptional bowling skills and rare talent in white-ball cricket, has been a sought-after player for many IPL franchises. Despite his major elbow injury, Mumbai Indians, made the bold decision to acquire Archer for a whopping INR 8 crore in the 2022 auction, knowing that he would be unavailable for the entire IPL season that year.
The team had their sights set on unleashing Archer alongside Jasprit Bumrah, forming one of the deadliest pace combinations in T20 cricket, in the following year’s IPL season.

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)
The video released by Mumbai Indians shows Jofra Archer facing off against the team’s openers, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, during a practice session. Archer’s fierce pace appeared to trouble both batters, as Rohit mistimed one of his shots while facing three deliveries, and Ishan was unable to connect with two of the shorter deliveries, indicating that Archer’s bowling was too hot to handle for the experienced MI batsmen.
In the 2022 IPL season, Mumbai Indians had a disappointing run as they finished at the bottom of the points table with only four wins in 14 matches, placing them below other top IPL teams like Chennai Super Kings who had a similar fate.
The absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been dealing with a recurring back injury since the home series against Australia prior to the T20 World Cup, has left a big void in the Mumbai Indians’ squad. However, the arrival of Jofra Archer will undoubtedly be a huge relief for the five-time IPL champions, as they now have a skilled bowler who can potentially fill in Bumrah’s shoes.
