The Mumbai Indians (MI) will start their campaign in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by taking on the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, April 2. Skipper Rohit Sharma discussed their focus and how the impact player rule would help the team ahead of the start of the tournament.

The Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in IPL history, having won five titles in the league. However, the Mumbai-based franchise had a poor campaign in the last two seasons, and they failed to qualify for the playoffs. They finished at the bottom of the points table the last season, winning only four of 14 matches in the group stage.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (March 29) ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League, Rohit Sharma said his main focus is to play better cricket and win the title in the upcoming season. Rohit said that this is a long tournament, and they need to divide their planning into two or three parts.

“That’s the goal (winning the IPL). We need to get a lot of things right. IPL is a long tournament as it goes on for around two months and we need to play 16-17 games to win the trophy. We have to focus on that and divide it into two to three halves and take it from there,” Rohit Sharma said at the press conference.

We Will Try And Make Sure To Get The Best Players – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma went on to address the ‘Impact Player’ rule and said that it is part of the team’s strategy. The Mumbai Indians captain stated that they will focus on their own plans and implement the rule in order to get the best players.

“It is an interesting rule and a new introduction to IPL. We will focus on our thing. We will get an idea of the rule in the first couple of games and we will have to implement that properly. We will try and make sure to get the best players,” he added.

The Rohit Sharma-led side is dealing with injuries, as Jhye Richardson was ruled out of the tournament and Jasprit Bumrah is doubtful to play. England pacer Jofra Archer is unlikely to play all 14 games to manage his workload.
