Former England captain Eoin Morgan praised Ajinkya Rahane for his brilliant batting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Eoin Morgan said that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter reinvented himself in this season of the IPL, which is closer to Brendon McCullum’s style of batting.

Ajinkya Rahane scored an unbeaten 71 runs off just 29 balls with the help of six fours and five sixes. Rahane formed a match-defining partnership with Shivam Dube in the middle overs to help the team reach a mammoth total of 235 runs. In reply, the KKR batters managed to score just 186 runs for the loss of eight wickets.

Speaking to Jio Cinema, Eoin Morgan said that Ajinkya Rahane’s strike rate was high and his shots were elegant and skilful, highlighting the six against Andre Russell.

“Absolutely, he has completely reinvented himself. This is closer to Brendon McCullum’s style of batting than Ajinkya Rahane’s. The strike rate in all the innings so far has been through the roof,” Eoin Morgan told Jio Cinema.

“Some of these shots are not just elegant, but incredibly skillful as well, helping things along the way. He hit a huge six (against Andre Russell). You have got to sit back and admire what they (CSK) have created,” he added.

Eoin Morgan said that the CSK team management and skipper deserved to be credited for Rahane’s success in this edition and added that they allowed him to play with freedom.

“It just goes to show the value of freedom and license that Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni has given him. Some incredible shots he has been played. That shot (reverse scoop). I have not seen anyone play something like this, not even someone like Jos Buttler,” he concluded.

Ajinkya Rahane was bought by a Chennai-based franchise for his base price of Rs 50 lakh in the IPL 2023 auction. The 34-year-old wasn’t included in the playing XI for the first two matches but got a chance to play against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the absence of Ben Stokes. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands, scoring a half-century on just 19 balls.

The former Rajasthan Royals skipper represented Chennai Super Kings in five matches in the IPL 2023. Rahane scored 209 runs with an impressive average of 52.25 and an outstanding strike rate of 199.05. He will be seen in action when the CSK take on the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their next match of the IPL 2023 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday, April 27.
