India opener, KL Rahul, suffered an injury scare during the practice session ahead of the third Test match as he was hit on his knee by on the deliveries from Ishant Sharma. Rahul though came back to bat in nets but was later seen applying an ice pack to his knee.

Should Rahul be ruled out, Shikhar Dhawan will be an automatic replacement for him. Even if he is fit, then also Dhawan might replace him as Rahul failed to capitalise the opportunity provided to him during the second Test. Looking at the habit of the skipper, Virat Kohli, there can be a case when Rahul might have to walk out, even if he is fit.

In the first Test, it was the pair of Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan who opened the innings for the visitors. They failed to score well in both the innings, and as a result of it, Dhawan was replaced with Rahul after just one game. Along with it, there were few more changes as skipper decided to drop Bhuvneshwar Kumar too.

India lost the Test match and also lost the series, with still one match to go.

Going into the third Test, there might be many changes again. Bhuvneshwar, Dinesh Karthik and Shikhar Dhawan are expected to walk in. Irrespective of any injury concern to Rahul, Dhawan might play the third Test match, in Rahul’s place.

The final Test of the series will be played from January 24 to 28 at New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Before the game, team management has called in two pacers viz Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur, who will be bowling to batsmen in the net sessions before the start of the final Test.

Shardul will be staying in South Africa for long as he is a part of the India ODI side. On the other hand, Saini will be assessed by team management before they take a final call on him.

Post the completion of the third Test match, team India will play a total of six ODIs and three T20Is as well. The last game of the series will be played on February 24.
