Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad will lament his failure to take his side over the line against India in their 2016 World T20 clash. India and Bangladesh have always had matches worth reminiscing. Even though the latter remain the underdogs amongst the two, but they push India to their absolute limits.

And, in one such encounter, the Tigers came ever so close to pulling off one of the upsets on the grandest stage only to lose by a run.

The 2016 World T20 match between India and Bangladesh in Bengaluru was undoubtedly the most nail-biting encounters between the two sides. With two runs required off three deliveries and Mahmudullah Riyad and Mushfiqur Rahim in the middle, it was their match to lose. However, instead of bunting the singles, the duo went for big shots that resulted in their departure.

India had scratched themselves to 145 off their 20 overs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Rahim had helped himself to a couple of boundaries in the final over to make the equation very comfortable. However, he couldn’t finish it off as he spooned the next delivery to Shikhar Dhawan. Hardik Pandya, who was a new entrant to international cricket back then, also deserved the credit for maintaining his level-headedness.

In a live interaction with CricFrenzy, the 34-year old admitted that darkness gripped them and they all succumbed to tears. At the same time, the Bangladesh T20 skipper feels grateful to have learned a lesson and that only by getting hurt, one learns moving forward.

After Mushfiqur Rahim got out, Mahmudullah Riyad struck a full toss to deep mid-wicket region where Ravindra Jadeja took a screamer. With a couple required off the final delivery, MS Dhoni ran out Mustafizur Rahman to sneak a one-run victory.

“Yes, I’ve cried, actually we all did when we got back to the dressing room we all cried. Because I think that was a great lesson I’ve learned in my life. I did a horrible mistake. It burns me all the time whenever I think about it. But I think I’ve learned from that mistake, once I heard that ‘you burn you learn’. So, I was burned on that day.”
