The England Cricket Team has suffered a major blow before the Sri Lanka tour as fast bowler Mark Wood is set to miss the tour due to a side strain injury.

It is a huge setback for them as Wood was a key figure of the team that recently won the T20I and Test series in South Africa. Wood recently came out of a similar injury that he suffered during the ICC World Cup in 2019.

Wood has been an exceptional bowler for England in recent times. He was one of the key members of the team that won the ICC Cricket World Cup last year.

Durham fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of the Test tour of Sri Lanka with a left side strain.

Wood sustained the injury at the end of the South Africa tour earlier this month. He underwent several scans in London, which confirmed a small tear to his left side.

The promising pacer will now commence an injury rehabilitation programme, working with England and Durham medical teams respectively.

Lancashire seamer Saqib Mahmood will replace Wood. The England Test squad travels to Sri Lanka on Monday.

Wood is an inevitable figure of the English team. Apart from his bowling abilities, Wood’s batting antics is what helps the English team the most. He can play some quickfire knocks lower down the order and prove to be handy for his team.

He recently smashed 42 runs in the first innings of the third Test against South Africa. He took only 23 balls in the process and played some exciting shots. He then clinched three crucial wickets in the second innings to hand a loss to the Proteas.

In the fourth test, Wood took nine wickets, including 5/46 in South Africa’s first innings, and scored 35 with the bat as England won again.
