India beat New Zealand by six wickets in the second T20I of the three-match series at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, January 29. The young all-rounder Washington Sundar has spoken about a horrible mix-up with Suryakumar Yadav during the crucial phase of the match.

The Men in Blue won the match with just one ball to spare and levelled the series at 1-1. The Kiwis won the toss and elected to bat first, as chasing was difficult on this surface. The Black Caps came up with an unchanged playing XI, while the hosts made one change to their side, replacing Umran Malik with Yuzvendra Chahal.

All Of Us Have Been On Our Toes – Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar said that the pitch conditions in Lucknow were very exciting and the whole team was on their toes. The spin bowler believes that batsmen need skill to play well against spin bowlers in turning tracks.

“All of us have been on our toes and I’m sure everyone in the stadium and people watching on TV as well, and you guys (commentators) as well would have been on toes, hoping that India would get through the line quite easily. It was very exciting (the conditions),” said Sundar.

“Lots of teams are very well equipped, they all come with quite a few fast bowlers and spinners as well. 2/3 out of 10-11 games like these would be amazing and it’s again a skill as to how well you play spin and get through the game. It’s exciting and we are all happy that we won the game,” he added.

New Zealand managed to score 99 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the allotted 20 overs, which is their lowest-ever total against India in the shortest format of the game. The spin-bowling trio of Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav took one wicket each.

“It was very important for him (SKY) to stay till the end and certain things like that happen in a game. Especially when things get quite tough in the middle, one misjudgement happens,” he concluded.

Suryakumar Yadav and skipper Hardik Pandya made an unbeaten 31-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Surya remained unbeaten on 26 and finished the match with a boundary on the penultimate ball of India’s innings.
