Veteran India National Cricket Team off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was furious about the controversial dismissal of the all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the ODI series opener between India and New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad on Wednesday, January 18.

The controversial dismissal occurred on the 4th ball of the 40th over, which was bowled by Daryl Mitchell. Mitchell delivered a good length ball, pitching outside off-stump, to Hardik and the all-rounder tried to play the ball fine, but the extra bounce meant that he missed it completely. The ball went into wicket-keeper Tom Latham’s gloves, the bails were also dislodged and it seemed like Hardik got dismissed.

New Zealand appealed for a bowled dismissal. The decision went upstairs and the third umpire made the decision in New Zealand’s favour and declared Hardik bowled out by Mitchell. Notably, the replays had clearly shown that the ball went above the stumps and the bails were dislodged by the gloves of wicket-keeper Tom Latham.

Later in the innings, the Kiwi captain and wicket-keeper, Latham, was once again under the spotlight after he accidentally dislodged the bails when Gill played the cut shot and the decision went upstairs.

The veteran off-spinner Ashwin was clearly disappointed with the third umpire’s poor decision making and he took to Twitter to state that Shubman Gill’s cut shot where Latham accidentally dislodged the bails once again clearly proved why Hardik was not out.

“Forget about split screens and replays, the cut shot from Shubhman Gill proved why Hardik was clearly Not Out. #indvsnz,” said Ashwin on Twitter.

Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Wasim Jaffer also took to Twitter to explain how Hardik was robbed during the first ODI.

“1. Clear gap between ball and bails. 2. Ball is inside gloves, bails not lit yet. 3. Bails lit after brush from gloves. Hardik robbed there. #INDvNZ,” said Jaffer.
