IND vs NZ: “I’d Have Rathered If Indian Captain Rohit Sharma Had Enforced Rather Than Rescinded” – Ian Chappell On Mohammed Shami’s Run Out Appeal At Non-Striker End

The International Cricket Council (ICC) changed the term “mankading” from “unfair play” to “run out” and “fair dismissal” in 2022. Former Australian skipper and legendary batter Ian Chappell believes that the current law of “run out” at the non-striker’s end should be changed to make it a simple one rather than a complicated one.

Mankading came into the spotlight when Ravi Ashwin used it against Jos Buttler in the IPL in 2019. The Indian women’s team all-rounder Deepti Sharma ran out Charlotte Dean at the non-striker’s end during England’s tour. Adam Zampa attempted a run out in the Big Bash League, but it was turned down by the third umpire.

Mohammed Shami ran out Dasun Shanaka at the non-striker’s end for backing up too early in the first ODI against Sri Lanka. However, Rohit Sharma withdrew the appeal, allowing Shanaka to complete his century. Shanaka scored an unbeaten century of 108 runs off 88 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes. He would not have reached the landmark if Rohit had not intervened.

Cricket Is Renowned For Choosing The Complicated Solution – Ian Chappell

Ian Chappell opined that the Indian captain should not have withdrawn his appeal after the bails were removed. Chappell feels that Rohit would have been better off sticking with the decision rather than withdrawing the appeal.

“Cricket is renowned for choosing the complicated solution. Attempting a run out at the bowler’s end without warning a batsman is not unsporting. Appealing for a catch that a fielder knows he’s caught should not be subjected to crowd booing as it’s legal,” Chappell wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

“In the Guwahati game against Sri Lanka, I’d have preferred if Indian captain Rohit Sharma had enforced, rather than rescinded, the run-out appeal against his opposite number Dasun Shanaka,” he added.

India will take on New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, on Friday, January 27. Hardik Pandya will lead the side in the shorter format, with Suryakumar Yadav serving as his deputy in the absence of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul.
