India defeated New Zealand by eight wickets in the second One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Saturday, January 21. The Men in Blue took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has said that he prefers to play in matches rather than engage in practice sessions to maintain optimum fitness.

Mohammad Shami set the tone for the match with his spell with the new ball, dismissing Finn Allen for zero in the first over of the innings. The Men in Blue bowled out the opposition for 108 runs, and openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill played solid knocks to chase down the target in 20.1 overs. Shami, who took three wickets for 18 runs in six overs, was adjudged the man of the match for his brilliant bowling.

Hope The Main Players Stay In A Good Zone – Mohammed Shami

In the post-match presentation, Shami said that playing regular matches is the only way to maintain optimum fitness for the ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be held in India in October-November.

“I always prefer playing matches over practice. It is always better to play maximum number of games to get ready for a big event. Load is being managed and it is being managed properly. I just hope the main players stay in a good zone (ahead of the World Cup),” said Shami after a match-winning spell in the second ODI against New Zealand here on Saturday.

Earlier this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to choose a 20-player pool, and the national cricket academy will work with IPL franchises to monitor the fitness of “targeted” players. They took this decision to better prepare the team for the World Cup and reduce injury problems.
