Legendary India National Cricket Team all-rounder and the 1983 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, has shared his blunt opinions on the recent string of injuries in Indian cricket.

Although India have been performing quite well in bilateral series, several players have suffered injuries very frequently in recent times, which has hurt the side a lot. India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been out of action since September last year due to a back injury and the star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja last played for India in August last year before being ruled out with a knee injury.

In a conversation with Gulf News, Kapil Dev, who has had an outstanding 16-year-long international career, was asked about the string of injuries in Indian cricket. He replied that the extended season in cricket is one of the key factors behind more players getting injured very frequently.

“Now the season extends to more than 10 months. The more you play the more injuries will happen. Cricket is not a simple game. One has to be athletic, use all the muscles and play on different ground conditions, the softness and the hardness. Adapting to everything is not so easy, it takes a toll on the body. So you crack,” he said.

The pacers are allowed to bowl only 30 balls, that’s one reason – Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev further talked about the Indian speedsters getting injured. He pinpointed that the current generation pacers are allowed to bowl only 30 deliveries in the nets and said that taking pressure directly during the game leads to the bowlers suffering injuries. He added that the pacers should bowl more in the nets to prepare their body to handle the pressure during the match.

“The more you bowl in the net, the more your muscle will start developing. Today, I am told, that the pacers are allowed to bowl only 30 balls. That’s one reason. When they take so much stress to play at the professional level, then the body starts cracking. They have to bowl more than anything else,” he said.
