New Zealand beat India by 21 runs in the first T20I at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday, January 27, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The Kiwi all-rounder Jimmy Neesham has given a brilliant reply about the crazy fan following of former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, even years after his international retirement.

Dhoni received a grand applause from the crowd when he was seen watching the first T20I with his wife Sakshi. The crowd went absolutely nuts when the couple’s visuals appeared on the stadium’s screen. Jharkhand batter was also seen during the playing of the national anthem, and the Ranchi crowd took over the stadium with chants of “Dhoni, Dhoni”.

“It’s a great feeling actually. You sort of feel, you can fly under the radar,” Neesham told Star Sports. “No one is really there to watch you bat or bowl. Everyone is there to watch someone else. I always quite enjoyed it to be honest, coming to India knowing that the pressure will be on someone else.”

Batting first, New Zealand scored 176 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell scored quick fifties to help the Kiwis reach a good total. India were 127-8 at one stage in the chase, but Washington Sundar’s fifty helped the team reach a respectable total of 155 runs.

After suffering a 3-0 whitewash in the one-day internationals, the visitors made a stunning comeback with their first win in the white-ball series. Skipper Mitchell Santner led from the front with his bowling and recorded figures of 2-11 in his quota of four overs, while Michael Bracewell and Lockie Ferguson claimed two wickets each. India will face New Zealand in the second T20I in Lucknow on Sunday, January 29.
