Young batsman Shubman Gill scored his maiden T20I century in the third match between India and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 1. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer praised Shubman Gill and said that he proved his hitting ability with the brilliant century in the final match.

The Men in Blue beat the Black Caps by 168 runs in the last match to clinch the three-match T20I series 2-1. Shubman Gill struggled in the first two matches, scoring 7 and 11 runs. However, the right-handed batsman scored an unbeaten century of 126 off 63 balls and surpassed Virat Kohli’s 122 against Afghanistan to record highest individual score for India in the shorter format.

He Has Become Over A Period Of A Couple Of Months – Wasim Jaffer

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Wasim Jaffer said that there were question marks over Gill’s batting ability in T20 cricket, but he proved the critics wrong. The former India cricketer said the 23-year-old has become a more mature batsman in the past few months.

“Shubman Gill beat New Zealand by 60 runs himself. He has come of age, surely, the way he has batted in the last couple of months in Tests and in ODIs. The T20 format was the only question mark over his ability and his strike rate,” Wasim Jaffer said.

“There was no denying that he had kind of conquered Test cricket a little bit. In one-day cricket, he has made a spot of his own. In the T20s, there were question marks about his hitting ability. It just goes on to show how mature he has become over a period of a couple of months,” he added.

What A Knock It Has Been In A Series Decider – Wasim Jaffer

The 44-year-old said that Gill played a brilliant knock with magnificent hitting in the series decider.

“What a knock it has been in a series decider. The last 76-78 runs, what magnificent hitting we have seen. We had never seen that. Probably in that double hundred we saw a bit, but today was clean striking and absolutely brutal hitting from him.”

Shubman Gill will next be seen in action in a four-match Test series against Australia, with the first Test set to begin at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur from February 9.
