Peshawar Zalmi are set to take on Lahore Qalandars in the 9th match of the PSL 2022 on Wednesday at National Stadium in Karachi. Peshawar Zalmi looked promising in their first game of the tournament. They beat Quetta Gladiators by 5 wickets. However, the Zalmis succumbed to a 9-wicket defeat at the hands of Islamabad United in their next game.
Peshawar Zalmi batted first in that encounter and were reduced to 35 for 4 in 6.1 overs. The likes of Kohler Cadmore (0 of 3), Yasir Khan (14 off 9), Haider Ali (15 off 13), and Talat (2 off 9) failed to hit the straps.
However, Shoaib Malik and Sherfane Rutherford then steadied the ship as the duo put on a 73-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Shoaib Malik, unfortunately, got out after scoring 25 of 22 balls but Sherfane Rutherford went on to play an unbeaten 70-run knock off 46 balls.
Ben Cutting also played a crucial cameo of 26 runs in 17 balls. Thanks to those vital contributions, Peshawar Zalmi managed to reach a competitive score of 170 runs in the first innings. However, the total didn’t prove enough against a formidable batting unit of Islamabad United. They chased down the target in 15.5 overs with 9 wickets in hand. Peshawar Zalmi’s bowlers couldn’t pick a single wicket during the innings. The only wicket which came was through a run-out.
None of the bowlers looked threatening. They need to try to find out ways to pick wickets against Lahore Qalandars. Otherwise, they can suffer another defeat. If reports are to be believed, Hazratullah Zazai is set to play the next game. This will strengthen their batting unit, but bowling remains their biggest concern.
Facing them are Lahore Qalandars, who are coming into the contest on the back of a morale-boosting 6-wicket win over Karachi Kings. They would look to continue the winning momentum. Lahore Qalandars bowled a lot of bad deliveries in the first half of the first innings. The Qalandars couldn’t pick a single wicket in the first 10 overs. However, they bowled quite well in the latter half as they picked 6 wickets in the final seven overs.
Rashid Khan, as usual, was brilliant, picking 1 for 24 in his 4 overs. Shaheen Afridi was far from his best as he was a bit wayward. Afridi picked 1 for 31 in 4 overs. Haris Rauf didn’t start off too well but managed to pick crucial wickets in the slog overs. He returned with figures of 3 for 33 in 4 overs. Karachi Kings still managed to post a 170-run total in the first innings.
In response to that, Lahore lost Abdullah Shafique (8 off 8) and Kamran Ghulam (6 off 9) early in the innings. But, Fakhar Zaman kept the team in the chase as he was smashing the bowlers right, left and centre. While wickets kept falling at one end, Fakhar Zaman ensured he stayed right till the end and kept the team’s hopes alive in the chase.
The southpaw scored an outstanding 106-run knock off 60 deliveries, including 12 fours and 4 sixes. He got out on the last ball of the 19th over but Samit Patel ensured that the team chase down the score with 4 balls remaining in the end. M Hafeez (24 off 21) was guilty of not converting the start into a big score. He would be desperate to play a big knock on Wednesday.
