India and West Indies shared day one of the second Test equally as the days’ play ended on India batting at 264 for five at the Sabina Park in Jamaica. Debutant Rahkeem Cornwall had a good debut claiming one wicket and grabbing two wickets. Mayank Agarwal heaped praise on the West Indies all-rounder saying that he is a promising talent.

West Indies bounced back in the evening session to finish the opening day on even stevens. Put to bat first, India got off to a good start courtesy KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. They added 32 runs for the first wicket before Jason Holder provided the first breakthrough with Rahkeem Cornwall claiming an easy catch.

The host soon brought the debutant into the attack who extracted some bounce out of the wicket to get the better of out-of-form Cheteshwar Pujara. Agarwal and Virat Kohli steadied the innings with half-centuries, but West Indies bounced back to reduce India by half. But youngsters Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari applied themselves to finish the day at 264 for five.

Mayank Agarwal, who missed his century, lauded Rahkeem Cornwall calling him a promising cricketer. He also added that the giant-looking all-rounder is very consistent with his line and length and is very tough to score runs off him.

“Rahkeem is very, very [consistent], he forms good clusters and he keeps bowling those areas, keeps bowling those areas. I thought it wasn’t very easy to score off him,” Mayank said.

Furthermore, Mayank Agarwal added that they are in a great position in the Test match after day one. He also said that the first session was tough to bat with the ball doing a bit. Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari will have to bat long and post decent first innings total to post West Indies under pressure.

“We are in a great position. To have just lost five wickets on a track like that was a good effort from our side West Indies reduced,” Agarwal said. “I thought the first session – the ball was doing a bit. Kemar Roach and Holder bowled great areas. It wasn’t easy – there was a lot of moisture and the ball was doing a bit,” he concluded.
