Ranchi is all set to host the second ODI between India and South Africa on October 9, Sunday. The venue has hosted five ODIs the last of which was played back in 2019. South Africa are desperate for a series win while India are keen to keep the series alive.

The ODI series is important for both teams in different ways. For South Africa, a series win keeps them in the hunt for direct qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup. They are placed 11th in the World Cup Super League (WCSL) points table at the moment. A series win will take them to the ninth spot.

“To qualify for next year’s World Cup is going to be really hard but we are definitely going to try. Our goal at this moment is the T20 World Cup coming up in a couple of days’ time. “We are not too worried about other things we can’t control at this moment. Every time we get on to the field wearing the South African jersey we want to win the game. We are just taking step by step, game by game at this moment” said Heinrich Klaasen after their win in the first ODI.

For India, the series is an opportunity for many of these players to stake a claim for selection in the next ODI World Cup. Sanju Samson took the opportunity with both hands as he scored an unbeaten 86 in the first ODI and kept India in the chase. Shreyas Iyer also scored a crucial 50 and gave the management an option as well.

India’s death bowling continues to be a growing concern in ODIs and T20Is. Ravi Bishnoi and Avesk Khan were the most expensive bowlers for India. The others also conceded runs in aplenty. They have to address it in the next two games if they want to win the series.
