Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar stated that Indian batter, Virat Kohli, could be asked to bat at No. 3 in the place of Cheteshwar Pujara but if the final decision should be left to the former Indian skipper.

Kohli generally bats at No. 4 in Tests and he has made that spot his own over the last few years. However, now that Pujara has returned to domestic cricket along with Ajinkya Rahane, there is a hole in the batting order.

India has a few options to choose from – Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Shreyas Iyer, and Shubman Gill are the ones vying for the batting slots. If Kohli wants to take the pressure off of a newcomer, he can make the No. 3 spot his own.

I think it is something that the team management or Rohit needs to have a word with him. Kohli has the game for when a wicket falls early and also to shift gears when there is a partnership of more than a hundred. But if he is comfortable at No. 4 then do not disturb him. The decision should be left to him,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

Gavaskar also reckoned that Kohli is due a big innings and without the burden of captaincy, he can focus on his batting. Any chinks in his batting can be fixed now that he doesn’t have to worry about the playing XI and bowling changes.

If there are any issues with Kohli’s batting, he is going to be able to sort it out himself. The leader in you never goes because you want to make a contribution. But he is also going to be concentrating more on his own batting. So my feeling is that he will be more productive now than in the past couple of years,” Gavaskar further added.

Rohit Sharma will be taking over as the Test captain and his first test will be when the Indians take on Sri Lanka in a 2-match Test series starting on March 4.
