Iyer’s efforts helped India put a sizeable total of 252 in the first innings as the batting of the hosts had stumbled at 126/5 in 33 overs. Iyer smashed 10 boundaries and four sixes in his gritty knock where he displayed a calm and composed character of himself on the pitch.

Just after wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant’s dismissal, Iyer hit three boundaries in an over to Sri Lanka spinner Lasith Embuldeniya in the 35th over. Despite getting a reprieve after being dropped by Kusal Mendis off Praveen Jayawickrama’s bowling in the 58th over, Iyer was dismissed by the same bowler as he went down the track to hit a big shot but missed it and Sri Lanka keeper Niroshan Dickwella dislodged the bails from behind the wickets.

Iyer got a rousing ovation from the crowd in the stands as he walked back to the dressing room after his stupendous innings against the pink ball, his first experience playing in the Day-Night Test.

After his dismissal, Iyer became the fourth Indian batter to get stumped out batting in the nineties in Test cricket. The Mumbai batter joined the likes of Dilip Vengsarkar (96 vs PAK, 1987), Sachin Tendulkar (90 vs ENG, 2001) and Virender Sehwag (99 vs SL, 2010).
