Both the openers, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan, looked in ominous form. The duo managed to compile 111 runs for the opening wicket inside the first 12 overs. Rohit Sharma was the first wicket to fell on the last ball of the 12th over as he got out after scoring 44 runs in 32 deliveries.

Ishan Kishan, however, kept hitting boundaries right, left, and center. He managed to score 89 runs in just 56 deliveries, a knock which was studded with 10 fours and 3 sixes. In the absence of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer came at number three position. He struggled to get his timing right in the first 15 deliveries but changed geared thereafter. Iyer wreaked havoc with the bat in the final few overs of the innings and went on to score 57 runs in just 28 deliveries.

Valuable contributions from the top three batsmen helped the team reach 199 runs in the first innings. In reply, Sri Lanka could only muster 137 runs, thereby falling 62 runs short of the target. Man in form, Pathum Nissanka got out on the very first ball of the second innings. Youngsters such as Kamila Mishara (13) and Janith Liyanage (11) too couldn’t make useful contributions with the bat.

Wickets kept falling at regular intervals as Sri Lanka failed to build partnerships. Charith Asalanka was the lone warrior for them. He scored 53 runs in 47 deliveries but lacked support from the other end. Heading into the next game, they would be looking to exhibit better performance from both bat and ball.

As for India’s bowling, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was brilliant in the power play. He picked two useful wickets and gave away only 9 runs in 2 overs. Besides, Ravindra Jadeja (1 for 28) and Yuzvendra Chahal (1 for 9) also returned with exceptional figures. In the third and final T20I of the series, India might look to give the opportunity to Avesh Khan or Kuldeep Yadav.
