India and Sri Lanka are set to battle against each other in a two-match Test series. India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test will commence on March 4 (Friday). The venue of the encounter is IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. India recently defeated Sri Lanka in a T20I series 3-0 by winning all three games.

India has dominated Sri Lanka on home soil. Out of 20 matches between India and Sri Lanka at the former’s home, India has won 11 games while 9 ended in a draw. Hence, Sri Lanka has a very poor record when it comes to playing Tests in India. Ahead of India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test, here we take a glance at India’s predicted playing XI against India.

Rohit Sharma is the new Test skipper of India and will lead the team in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. The right-handed batsman did not play for India in the last two Test series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. He last played a Test match against England at The Oval in September 2021, where he slammed a century. Sharma will open the innings for India in the opening Test against Sri Lanka.

Mayank Agarwal

Mayank Agarwal might be picked as the other opener for the team in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. Since KL Rahul is not part of the series, Agarwal will be a good option for the team for an opener. He was part of the India vs South Africa Test series in January. The right-handed batsman smacked 135 runs in 3 Tests at an average of 22.50.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli returns to the squad after missing the India vs Sri Lanka T20I series. The right-handed batsman stormed a fabulous fifty in his previous match, which was the 2nd T20I against West Indies. Virat Kohli will play under skipper Rohit Sharma during the Test series against Sri Lanka.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer might be the middle-order batsman for the team in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. Iyer has been inducted into the squad as Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara have been given rest due to their poor form.

Iyer slammed a century and half-century in both innings in his debut Test against New Zealand in November last year. The right-handed batsman showed a spectacular form in recent India vs Sri Lanka T20I series and will seek to carry forward his good batting show.

Rishabh Pant was given rest for India vs Sri Lanka T20I series and will be back to the squad for the Test series. Pant will be the wicketkeeper for the team. The left-handed batsman slammed a half-century in his previous game- India vs West Indies 2nd T20I. He also showed a good performance in his previous Test series against South Africa, where he slammed a century in one game.

Hanuma Vihari

In the absence of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari might get a chance to play in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. Hanuma is a Test specialist batsman for India. In the last series against South Africa, the right-handed batsman slammed 60 runs in 2 innings at an average of 60.0. He played an important unbeaten 40-run knock in one game.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja might be the all-rounder for the team in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. The left-handed batsman has returned to the side after a long break due to a knee injury. In the recent India vs Sri Lanka T20I series, the left-handed batsman showed good form with both bat and ball. Along with batting, Jadeja will play a crucial role in bowling with his spin attack.

Ravichandran Ashwin might be the spinner and all-rounder for the team in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. The right-arm spinner played against South Africa in the previous Test series, where he accounted for 3 wickets in 3 Tests. Ashwin is a strong spinner for India at home venues and he will lead the spin attack against the Sri Lankans.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah will be one of the pacers for the team in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. The right-arm pacer gave a brilliant performance against South Africa in the previous Test series, scalping 12 wickets in 3 games at an average of 23.42. He will look to attack with the same force in India vs Sri Lanka Test series.

Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami might be another pacer for the team in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test. Against South Africa in the previous Test series, Shami was the top wicket-taker for India. He scalped 14 wickets in 3 Tests at an average of 21.0. Shami did not play in the previous IND vs SL T20I series, IND vs WI ODI, and T20I series. Hence, he will return to the squad after a long rest.

Mohammed Siraj might another pacer for the team in the opening Test against Sri Lanka. Siraj got injured during the previous Test series against South Africa during the 2nd Test, which also hampered India’s performance in the match. The right-arm pacer later showed good performance in India vs West Indies ODI series. He picked 5 wickets in 3 games at an average of 18.60.
