Ravi Shastri was made the coach in 2017. The former cricketer took the Asian giants to the top of the Test rankings with Virat Kohli as the captain. Although the odds of his re-appointment are very little, Ravi Shastri could be given the opportunity based on his man management and his ability to gel well with young players.

Ravi Shastri had initially become the director of the Indian cricket team in 2014 for a period of eight months from India’s tour of England till the 2015 World Cup, alongside Duncan Fletcher. He then had sole responsibility till 2016 and the 2016 World T20 saw the Men in Blue reach the semifinals again.

The team also briefly held the No 1 rank in Tests around February 2016. Ravi Shastri was removed in 2016 when Anil Kumble took over but on July 13, 2017, he was appointed officially the head coach of the Men in Blue, reuniting with Virat Kohli to forge a vibrant partnership. Ravi Shastri’s tenure as the head coach ended with the national side’s exit from the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. He may be the Indian coach again after the likes of VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid.
