Former India pacer RP Singh has backed fast bowler Umran Malik, saying the youngster has a lot of talent and ability.

Umran Malik has been one of the most talked-about names in the country in the last few weeks. The young pacer possesses the ability to consistently clock the deliveries at over 150 kmph.

On Thursday, India defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The victory also allowed India to extend their advantage to 2-0 and clinch the three-match series. KL Rahul slammed an unbeaten 64-run knockoff 103 balls as the hosts reached 219 for six in 43.2 overs, chasing a 216-run mark.

Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiru Kumara each grabbed two wickets for Sri Lanka. Initially, Nuwanidu Fernando’s half-century aided Sri Lanka’s total of 215 in 39.4 overs. Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav were in fine form for India’s bowling attack, both taking three wickets.

“Umran Malik possesses a lot of talent and skills”: RP Singh

The young Jammu and Kashmir pacer has made some important contributions while wearing the Indian jersey and has won over many with his speed in the few opportunities that have come his way.

“Umran Malik will surely get his chances but it would be interesting to see how he cements his place on the Indian side. Umran Malik possesses a lot of talent and skills but at the same time he will have to implement that in the right way and that will only come through experience,” Singh said during an interaction with CricketNext.

RP Singh was a member of the Indian team that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, led by MS Dhoni. The left-handed bowler appeared in 10 T20Is for India, taking 15 wickets.
