It came as a bit of a surprise when India’s skipper Rohit Sharma said at a press conference that he will start the first One-Day International versus Sri Lanka in Guwahati with Shubman Gill rather than Ishan Kishan. Ishan’s double hundred in the last ODI India played, versus Bangladesh in Chattogram, made it difficult for Rohit to decide to leave him out, he acknowledged.

Shubman, he claimed, likewise merits a good number of opportunities because he hasn’t done much wrong. Ishan Kishan made history by being the youngest and fastest player to achieve a double century in ODIs by scoring 210 runs off just 131 balls against Bangladesh.

The win, however, was not enough to ensure him a spot in the opening game of the three-match series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday in Guwahati. Gill, who was chosen above other batsmen, hit 70 runs off of 60 balls, including 11 boundaries.

Ishan Kishan Will Get His Chance: Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India, thinks the daring keeper-batter must wait for his “time,” as Gill has not done anything wrong.

“I’m sure he (Kishan) will get his chance. His time will come,” PTI cited the ex BCCI president as saying.

Venkatesh Prasad and several former cricketers lambasted Team India for leaving out Ishan Kishan in the ODI in Guwahati, but Ganguly opted to remain silent.

“I don’t know… It’s difficult for me to say. In India, we have too many opinions, let (head coach) Rahul Dravid and (skipper) Rohit Sharma decide. People who actually play the game should actually decide who’s the best,” On the midst of a promotional event, Ganguly stated.

Sourav Ganguly Lauds Virat Kohli

With his 45th ODI century in the Guwahati match, Kohli is currently four short of Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds.

When asked to contrast Tendulkar with Kohli, Ganguly responded, “It’s a difficult question to answer. Kohli is a fantastic player. He’s played many such innings, 45 hundreds don’t happen like this. He’s a special talent. There will be periods when he will not score, but he’s a special player.”
