Suryakumar Yadav, a batter for Team India, discussed his struggles to get into the Indian team. The Mumbai-born player had to wait a long time before making his debut for the national team, despite being very successful on the home circuit and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for numerous years.

Prior to the home series against England in 2021, Suryakumar gets his first call-up to the national team. Before that, he was in strong contention to join the team for the Australian tour but was passed over by the selectors, a decision that was roundly condemned.

I Would Always Think How I Could Be Different: Suryakumar Yadav

At the age of 30, he finally made his T20I debut against the visiting England team, and he hasn’t looked back since. In an interview with PTI, Suryakumar remarked that despite the repeated rejections over time, he was not annoyed by them:

“I won’t say I got irritated but I would always think how I could be different to move to the next level. So hard work continued and you need to enjoy the game also.”

He added: “That’s why you started playing cricket. Whether it’s a simple training session or even the food that was healthy but I didn’t enjoy earlier, I started to savour it. I knew that if I stop thinking about outcomes and just focus on the process, I would someday break the door.”

Suryakumar first gained notoriety while playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the lower part of the batting order. He was able to make the most of an opportunity to play in the top order for the Mumbai Indians (MI), which completely changed the course of his career.

If You Have Gone Through Domestic Grind In India, You Are Ready For International Cricket: Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar belonged to the group of cricketers who had accumulated a tonne of domestic experience before moving to the global stage.

In contrast to the workload management era, where players with little experience are called up and struggle at the top level, the years of grinding had advantages in that it made the changeover simpler.

Observing how his background in domestic cricket helped him adjust, Suryakumar said:

“Grinding it out at first-class level, you learn a lot of tricks of the trade. So when you graduate to the international level and play different bowlers, all you need to do is express yourself.”

He continued: “But let me tell you this. If you have gone through the domestic grind in India, you are ready for international cricket and when you start that level, you are not carrying any baggage. Just execute what you did at the domestic level.”
