Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has said that the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should play ODIs consistently without taking breaks because 2023 is a 50-over World Cup year.

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is all set to be held in India in October-November. It will be the first time the competition is held entirely in India as India hosted three previous editions partially in 1987, 1996, and 2011.

During a discussion on Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir was asked about the ingredients that India should concentrate on to win the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. He responded that the most important thing for the Indian team management would be to identify the core because the management has chopped and changed too frequently in the recent past. He also said that the core players like Kohli and Rohit can’t keep taking breaks. He said:

“First of all, you need to identify the core as well, which is very important. We’ve chopped and changed too many things too frequently as well. We’ve never had a settled unit. More importantly, you can’t keep taking breaks if the World Cup is around the corner.

“If you are playing a 50-over World Cup at least our core, whether it’s Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, all these guys have to play consistent cricket and together they need to play. They can’t keep taking breaks, when it’s a World Cup year.”

I hope these guys don’t take so much of a break, especially in a 50-over format – Gautam Gambhir

Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gautam Gambhir further said that he is hoping that the players will avoid taking breaks in 2023, especially when it comes to ODIs. He said:

“Suddenly you realise that by the time the World Cup is around the corner you still don’t have the settled unit and then you start making too many it will never work and that is what has happened in the last two World Cups, whether it’s the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup. So I hope these guys don’t take so much of break, especially in the 50-over format.”

India will begin their 2023 with a white-ball series against Sri Lanka at home. The Sri Lanka tour of India 2023 consists of three ODIs and three T20Is. The T20Is will be played on January 3, 5 and 7 in Mumbai, Pune and Rajkot respectively. The ODIs will be played on January 10, 12, and 15 in Guwahati, Kolkata, and Trivandrum respectively.
