Gautam Gambhir has praised Rahul Tripathi for his aggressive style in every spot he has batted in across teams.

In the third Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka on Saturday, January 7, Tripathi scored 35 runs off just 16 balls to put India on the board after Ishan Kishan was out early. The Men in Blue then set the visitors a lofty 229-run total before Suryakumar Yadav blasted an unbeaten 112 off just 51 balls to help his team win by 91 runs.

After the game, Gambhir told Star Sports that Tripathi’s approach stayed consistent throughout the game and that he wants to see more players like him on the squad.

“Rahul Tripathi, for example, has batted at every position for his franchise and state. He can open, play at No. 3, or bat in the middle order, but his approach is the same whether he is playing against the new ball or in the middle order. You want to see players like him.”

“Rahul Tripathi may be dissatisfied with his way of dismissal”: Gautam Gambhir

The veteran opener praised Tripathi for his effort but predicted that Tripathi will be unhappy with how he lost his wicket. As India posted a first-inning score of 228/5, Tripathi struck 35 runs off just 16 deliveries.

“Chamika Karunaratne did not bowl too many bad deliveries but it was Rahul Tripathi’s quality because of which he proved that expensive. The way Tripathi lost his wicket, he will be disappointed. The third man was up, if he had slashed hard, the ball might have gone above the third man but he just guided the ball like you give catches in the slips.”

In the final over of the powerplay, Tripathi smacked Chamika Karunaratne for two consecutive sixes down the ground. The Sri Lankan all-rounder then bowled a short ball, which the No. 3 hitter put right into the palms of Dilshan Madushanka at short third man.

During his innings, Tripathi hit five fours and two sixes. Before being dismissed, he hit three fours in the fifth over delivered by Maheesh Theekshana and two sixes off Karunaratne.
