Virat Kohli struck a brilliant century to guide India to a 67-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first of their three-match one-day international series in Guwahati on Tuesday. Virat Kohli made 113 runs, hitting 12 fours and a six in his 87-ball display. It was the former captain’s 45th ODI hundred and he is only four short of Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record.

Captain Rohit Sharma scored 83 and Shubman Gill made 70 as India ended their innings at 373-7 after being put in to bat first. In response, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka made an unbeaten 108 while opener Pathum Nissanka scored a solid 72, but it did not prove enough as the visitors failed to chase the big total.

Umran Malik and Mohammed Siraj claimed three and two wickets each respectively as the rest of the bowlers except for Axar Patel also picked a wicket each. Opener Pathum Nissanka also scored 72 for Sri Lanka in the first SL vs IND ODI.

Earlier put into bat, Rohit Sharma (83 off 67 balls) and Shubman Gill (70 off 60 balls) set a brilliant platform for the other batter with an opening stand of 143. Virat Kohli then joined the party with 113 off 87 balls to take India’s total to 373/7. For Sri Lanka, Kasun Rajitha claimed three wickets, but conceded 88 runs in the first SL vs IND ODI.

SL vs IND-1st ODI- India 373 for 7 (Kohli 113, Rohit 83, Gill 70, Rajitha 3-88) beat Sri Lanka 306 for 8 (Shanaka 108*, Nissanka 72, Malik 3-57, Siraj 2-30) by 67 runs

India and Sri Lanka will clash for the fifth time at the Eden Gardens, where the hosts have won three such clashes and the visitors won the infamous World Cup semifinal meeting in 1996. One match has so far ended in No Result.

One of the meetings between the two at the Eden Gardens saw records being broken as a young Rohit Sharma went on to register the highest individual score in ODIs (264) and also helped the team breach 400-mark for the first time at the venue back in 2014.

The Eden Gardens has in fact hosted 30 ODI matches so far, but the venue last hosted an ODI nearly six years ago when Australia toured India in 2017. South Africa were scheduled to play an ODI in 2020, but the match was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.

Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka attained a shoulder injury while fielding and went off the field. His inclusion in the 2nd ODI is unclear as of now. Maheesh Theekshana may come in for the next game as spinners rule in the SL vs IND games.

India have to bench the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan.  Both these players are in the form of their lives. Ishan Kishan is coming off after scoring a double hundred against Bangladesh, while Suryakumar Yadav is the No. 1 T20I ranked batter.

The right-handed batter and Indian current skipper Rohit Sharma has shown decent form in the 50-over format this year. Rohit Sharma will open the innings for the team in SL vs IND ODIs.

He opened with Shikhar Dhawan in the ODI series against Bangladesh before a thumb injury ruled him out of the 3rd ODI and Test series. He scored a 67-ball 83 in the 1st ODI against Sri Lanka and was involved in a 143-run opening stand with Shubman Gill. His innings was laced with 9 fours and 3 sixes.

The 34-year-old middle-order batter run machine Virat Kohli scored consecutive ODI tons -113 vs Bangladesh in the 3rd ODI and 113 vs Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI. A good show in the Asia Cup 2022 and T20 World Cup 2022, where he was among the leading run-getters, gave him the necessary confidence to return to form in ODIs too and he responded by scoring 113 in the last inconsequential ODI against Bangladesh.

His 113 off 87 balls in the 1st SL vs IND ODI was laced with 12 fours and a six and he was an obvious choice for Man of the Match.

Shreyas Iyer

India’s Shreyas Iyer is in sublime form in ODIs boasting an average of around 48 after the ODI series against Bangladesh. He had a phenomenal 2022 in ODIs amassing 724 runs in 17 ODIs averaging above 50.

He managed 129 runs against New Zealand averaging 64.5 in 2 innings, 191 runs against South Africa including a 113* in 3 innings, and 109 runs in 3 ODIs against Bangladesh. He will be a crucial middle-order batter in SL vs IND ODI series. He scored 28 off 24 balls in the 1st SL vs IND ODI.

KL Rahul might be another middle-order batsman for the team in the 2023 ODI World Cup and ODI series against Sri Lanka. He may also open the innings. The right-handed 31-year-old batter was named as the keeper for the ODI series against Bangladesh in Rishabh Pant’s absence.

KL Rahul has hit 5 tons in his ODI career. He top-scored in the 1st ODI against Bangladesh, scoring 73 off 70 when other Indian batters struggled. He will be a crucial middle-order batter in SL vs IND ODI series. He scored 39 off 29 in the 1st SL vs IND ODI.

Hardik Pandya, the 29-year-old pace all-rounder, was rested for the ODI series against Zimbabwe and West Indies and his last ODI series was against England in July 2022.

He scored 71 and picked 4/24 in the last 3rd ODI against England to bag the MOS award for scoring 100 runs and picking 6 scalps in that series. He wasn’t in the ODI squad for the Bangladesh series. He will be a crucial all-rounder in SL vs IND ODI series. He scored 14 and took 1/33 in 6 overs in the first SL vs IND ODI.

Yuzvendra Chahal may be picked in India’s 2023 World Cup ODI squad. He was wicketless in the 1st ODI against the Kiwis but had picked 7 wickets in 3 ODIs against West Indies and England in the preceding ODI series.

Yuzvendra Chahal was benched surprisingly despite being in the squad throughout the T20 World Cup 2022. He was earlier omitted from India’s T20 WC 2021 squad. He wasn’t in the Indian squad facing Bangladesh in a 3-match ODI series but returned against Sri Lanka in SL vs IND ODI series. He took 1/58 in the first SL vs IND ODI.

Axar Patel

Axar Patel had an off day, being the only Indian bowler to go wicketless. He bowled his full quota of 10 overs and conceded 58 runs. With the bat, he could score only 9 off as many balls. He would be hopeful of a better outing in the 2nd SL vs IND ODI.

Mohammed Shami

Bengal pacer Mohammed Shami’s last ODI assignment came against hosts England in July 2022 while his last Test was the 5th rescheduled Test against England. His last T20I came in November 2022 in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final defeat against England.

The veteran pacer Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the ODI and Test series against Bangladesh due to a right shoulder injury. He returned with figures of 1/67 in 9 overs in the first SL vs IND ODI.

Mohammed Siraj

He is in the Indian playing XI for the 1st ODI against Bangladesh and was the pick of the Indian bowlers picking 3/32 in 10 overs. He picked 2/73 and 1/27 in the other two ODIs. Mohammed Siraj picked 2/30 in 7 overs in the first SL vs IND ODI.
