The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai hosted the first T20I of the three-match series between Hardik Pandya-led India National Cricket Team and Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team on Tuesday, January 3.
India National Cricket Team defeated the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team in an absolutely nail-biting encounter to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The second T20I will be played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Thursday, January 5.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field first in the match. The Lankan Lions fielded the playing XI on expected lines. The Men In Blue, on the other hand, gave debut caps to Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi. Also, India were without the services of premier left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh because he was unavailable for selection.
Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill opened the innings for India and Kasun Rajith opened the attack for Sri Lanka. Kishan provided India with a terrific start as he smashed three boundaries in the 1st over itself.

Debutant Shubman Gill failed to impress as he fell for 7 on the third ball of the 3rd over, which was bowled by Maheesh Theekshana. Also, World No.1 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav fell to his favourite scoop for 7 on the first ball of the 6th over, which was bowled by Chamika Karunaratne.
In the 7th over, Dhananjaya de Silva sent back Sanju Samson for 5. The wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who batted with a brilliant strike rate in the initial half of his innings, failed to score a fifty in the match. Star leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga cleaned Kishan up in the 11th over. The 24-year-old scored 37 runs off 29 balls, including 3 fours and 2 sixes.
Captain Hardik Pandya batted cautiously throughout his innings and managed to score 29 runs off 27 balls, including 4 fours, before being dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka in the 15th over.
Meanwhile, Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel got together at the crease when India were at 94/5 and their phenomenal 68-run stand in 35 balls helped India post 162/5 on the board.
Chasing the target, Sri Lanka’s top-5 struggled against the Indian pace trio of Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi and Harshal Patel. The Lankan Lions were reduced to 68/5 inside 11 overs.
Then, skipper Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga stitched together crucial 40 runs in 23 balls to shift the momentum towards their side. Debutant Shivam Mavi broke the partnership by dismissing Wanindu Hasaranga, who scored 10-ball 21.
Also, Umran Malik picked up the big wicket of the Sri Lanka captain, who was looking good out in the middle, with a special 155kph delivery. The 31-year-old Dasun Shanaka fought really well and scored incredible 45 runs off 27 balls, including 3 fours and 3 sixes.
Sri Lanka needed 13 runs off the last over and Hardik Pandya handed the ball to left-arm spinner Axar Patel. Chamika Karunaratne smashed a six on the third ball and his side needed just 5 runs off 3 balls. However, the equation came down to 4 runs off the final ball and Sri Lanka lost by 2 runs.

Umran Malik not just spitting fire but also improving his line and length 👏

Really happy to see Umran Malik bowling a controlled spell! That ball to take the big wicket of Dasun Shanaka was 155kmph! He is now learning to keep it in control but pace isn’t going down! Hoping he continues to do well in upcoming matches. #INDvSL

Indian team bonds well on the field and plays without fear when the bhaiyyas Rohit and Virat are not around. This bhaiyya culture needs to go away and players should be given the freedom to express themselves- which Hardik is doing well as a Captain. #SLvIND #INDvSL

INDIA Won the on the last ball #INDvSL match, great !😃
But last over main 13 runs defend karne ho to spinner pe bet karna risky move tha bcoz aapke samne champion team hai #SriLanka. #HardikPandya ne karna tha over i think.

Leaving two deliveries in the last over with the hope of wides… I am not too sure if it was the right decision.

In the long run it would have been better if India lost this match,it would have exposed the tactical blunders and selection errors in a much better way.
Irrespective of result of the series,if SL can hit Chahal out of the team,it would be quite beneficial for India.#INDvSL
