England and Australia are set to lock horns with each other in the fourth Test of the ongoing Ashes 2021-22 series, starting from 5th January. Sydney Cricket Stadium will host the Test match. Australia have been ruthless in the series thus far.

They have looked a far better team than England. Be it batting or bowling, Australia have ticked all boxes in the series. With three wins in the first three matches, they have already sealed the series and retained the urn. And their next target would be to register a series whitewash.

Australia registered a stellar bowling performance in the last Test against England. A combined bowling effort from the team led to England getting bowled out for just 185 in the first innings. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins picked three wickets each in the first innings.

Both have picked wicket consistently and helped Australia dominate in the series. Starc is currently the leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets to his name in 3 Tests, while Pat Cummins has 12 wickets in 2 Tests. Nathan Lyon, too, has been brilliant, having managed to pick 10 wickets in 3 Tests. Australia had a decent outing with the bat in the second innings of the third Test.

Marcus Harris, who had a forgettable series until that point, played a vital 76-run knock off 189. However, all the other batsmen failed to make a significant impact with the bat. James Anderson was superb with the ball as he picked 4 wickets for just 33 runs to bundle Australia out for 267 runs in the second innings.

England could have made a comeback after that but debutant Scott Boland ruined all their hopes. He was superb in his four-over spell. Bolland picked 6 wickets and gave away just 7 runs in his four overs. His spell saw an English collapse as England were bundled out for just 68 runs. Australia won the match by an innings and 14 runs.

England’s biggest concern right now is the lacklustre batting unit. England batters are looking completely out of sorts. The opening pair of Haseeb Hameed and Zak Crawley didn’t look too great.

The onus will, once again, be on Joe Root and Dawid Malan to score the bulk of the runs. Experienced campaigners such as Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Jonny Bairstow haven’t inspired a lot of confidence. England’s fortunes in the fourth Test depend largely on these three. The trio has to make sure they convert the start into big scores.

As far as the pace department is concerned, you don’t expect a lot of changes to take place. England might bring in Tom Bess in place of Jack Leach in the spin department.
