It has been a torrid time for the Indian openers in English conditions against a quality swing bowling attack for the last 10 years or so and it is time to rewrite those records. India has been trying a lot of opening combinations since the 2011 England series but it has not been working for them.

The 2014 series saw a slight improvement in the opening combination with Murali Vijay showing some stability, but he had a tough time in 2018 and it has been the story for the Indian openers coming to England. The worst part is that openers set the pace for the test and their poor form could affect the whole team. Here are 5 Indian openers with the highest individual score in tests in England since 2011.

The Tamil Nadu opener was picked for the Test series in England with the left-hander having a great reputation for playing those long innings. He was very crafty and it was his first international tour to England. In the first test at the Lords, Abhinav played a brilliant hand at the top alongside Gautam Gambhir.

He scored 49 in the first innings and was unfortunate to miss out on a well-deserved half-century. It is still the fifth-highest individual score in tests in England since 2011. India however lost the opening test and it paved the way for a continuous string of losses.

KL Rahul’s 84 in the first innings of the ongoing England test series is the second-highest individual score in tests in England since 2011. This was one of the most important knocks considering that he has been out of the Test squad for the last two years and the situation demanded him to open with Mayank Agarwal at the top.

Rahul put on an excellent opening stand with Rohit Sharma for the first wicket with 97 runs and he batted for 214 balls which is amazing in English conditions. He has taken India to a formidable total on the board in the first innings.

Murali Vijay – 146:

Vijay’s 146 is still the third-highest individual score for an Indian opener in England since 2011 and he followed it up with a half-century in the second innings as well.

Rahul Dravid was the man of the series in the 2011 England tour as he kept on piling up runs when all the other India batters looked in dismay. With Gautam Gambhir injured, Dravid had to open the innings alongside Virender Sehwag and he was the lone man standing in the entire innings with 146 not out.

Dravid’s 146 came in 266 balls with 20 fours in the innings and he looked like he was completely from another planet. It is portrayed to be one of the greatest knocks and is still the second-highest individual score since 2011.
