It is very important for any Indian batsman to make it count on his test debut as the competition in the country is intense and every opportunity is priceless. The start of any career is going to be very important and it will be easy for the management to judge a player on his performance more than his talent.

In that case, scoring a century on test debut gives an assurance that the player is bound to be in the mix for future tours and will come into the team any time. Here are 6 Indian batsmen who scored a century on their Test debut in the 20th century.

Indian Batsmen To Score A Century On Test Debut In The 20th Century:

Virender Sehwag:

Virender Sehwag is one of the most aggressive openers the world has seen and he has never failed to entertain the crowd. With two triple centuries in his Test career, Sehwag made his test debut in 2001 and he was sent in to bat at number six in the order.

He played an excellent knock of 105 in just 173 balls with 19 fours in his innings and was never afraid to play his shots. Despite his efforts, India lost the Test by 9 wickets at the Bloemfontein in the tour of South Africa.

Suresh Raina:

Suresh Raina owing to his excellent limited-overs form was awarded an opportunity in the test format as well in India’s tour of Sri Lanka. He responded immediately in the best way possible with an excellent 120 run knock with 12 fours and 2 sixes in the innings.

Sachin Tendulkar also scored a double century in the test to save India from the verge of defeat at Colombo. Raina did not get many opportunities in the test arena after that and he recently announced his retirement from all formats.

Shikhar Dhawan:

Shikhar Dhawan had a fantastic start to his Test career as he took on the Australian side with attacking innings on his test debut. He scored 187 in just 174 balls on his test debut which is among the highest individual scores for India on test debut.

Dhawan hit 33 fours and two sixes in the innings and it was one of the best debut innings in the longer formats. He was unfortunate to miss out on a double hundred but India won the test by 6 wickets in the end.

Rohit Sharma:

Rohit Sharma was at his prime form in the limited-overs format and the selectors wanted to desperately try him out in the test side as well. He scored a brilliant 177 on his test debut coming in at six in the batting order and showed his class with the bat.

India won the Test by an innings and 51 runs in the end and Rohit wasn’t a regular in the side despite his heroics on debut. However, he cemented his place in the test side as an opener in 2019 in the home series against South Africa.

Prithvi Shaw was one of the upcoming youngsters in the domestic circuit and he was called up for the national side in the series against West Indies in 2018. He made use of his opportunity with the bat as he scored a marvellous 134 run knock in just 154 balls.

Shaw hit 19 boundaries in his innings and he paced his innings really well with a  flurry of boundaries at the start of his innings. He hit the loose deliveries to the fence and wasn’t and looked very comfortable in the crease. India won the Test by an innings and 272 runs.

Shreyas Iyer made the latest entry to the list with a breathtaking century in the ongoing home series against New Zealand. He has been waiting for an opportunity in the Indian colours and this is the best time for him as India’s middle-order has been vulnerable for a long time.

He finished with 105 off 171 balls with 13 fours and two sixes in his innings and the beauty of his knock was the way he played the New Zealand spinners. He has taken the Indian total to a respectable score and all eyes will now be on New Zealand batters who have started really well.
