A shoulder injury has ended Harmanpreet Kaur’s hopes of playing in this year’s Women Super League to be held in the United Kingdom. The India star had sustained the injury before the final of the recently-concluded World Cup where England defeated India by 9 runs to lift the coveted title. Before the start of the World Cup, she was signed by Surrey Stars.

Harmanpreet starred for the Women in Blue in the World Cup. After a lukewarm start to the tournament, she found her form in the do-or-die clash against New Zealand by scoring 60 before playing a stunning 171-run knock against defending champions Australia in the semifinal. The whirlwind knock had come off just 115 balls and was studded with 20 fours and 7 sixes. She was also looking in good form in the final and had raced away to 51 before getting out against the run of play.

However, her hopes of making the most of the current form by playing in the upcoming tournament has been quashed after a MRI scan on her right shoulder revealed a tear. Had she played in the tournament, she would have become the first Indian women player to do so.

“I was in bad shape in the later stages of the World Cup but the physios got me going. It would have been great to be a part of Kia League. I had a successful stint with Sydney Thunder in Women’s Big Bash League [WBBL] which lifted my game and confidence. I will convey my unavailability to the franchise,” the all-rounder was quoted as saying by the news outlet.

Last year, she had become the first Indian – male or female – to sign a contract with a foreign T20 league after being roped in by Women’s Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder. She had enjoyed a brilliant outing with in Australia, scoring 296 runs and picking up six wickets. She was adjudged Thunder’s player of the tournament for her allround show.

Expressing her disappointment over missing the opportunity, she said:“I was really looking forward to playing alongside England’s World Cup winning cricketers – Natalie Sciver, Tammy Beaumont, Laura Marsh and Alex Hartley.”
