Australia U-19 cricketer Max Bryant cannot think of a better mentor, as he prepares for the ICC U-19 World Cup. New Zealand hosts the ICC U-19 World Cup from January 13.

Bryant, an opening batsman, has enjoyed training with McCullum as part of the Brisbane Heat squad this season. He is one of the most experienced cricketers in the Aussie squad. However, he is relatively an unknown name in a side featuring former Test captain Steve Waugh’s son Austin, emerging batsman and the skipper of the team Jason Sangha, and Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland’s son Will.

But, he is hopeful that fireworks in the one-day format will put his surname in lights.

Watching the former Kiwi captain, McCullum has made him grow in confidence after scores of 89 and 60 against New South Wales and Queensland for the CA XI in the JLT One-Day Cup.

Baz (McCullum) doesn’t do much talking, doesn’t get very personal about your game, but it’s all about preparation and what they do at training. I just try and take it all in; he’s a really chilled guy, hates over-complicating things and just trusts his game and I’m learning heaps from that.” Bryant said.

Much like his senior at Heat squad, Bryant is known for clearing the grounds with ease and has no plans to change his ways in New Zealand.

I was really surprised in my performances in the JLT (One-day Cup); it’s given me lots of confidence. Hopefully, I can do something similar (to Hazlewood and Marsh); I think I’m quite close to breaking into that next level already. I’m getting there,” he signed off.
