World Cup 1975: Format

The format of that competition saw the teams being divided into two groups of four, with each team playing the other teams in their group once; the top two from each group qualified for the semi-finals, with the winners of these matches meeting in the final.

According to the rule, each innings consisted of 60 overs with the players dressed in whites.

England, New Zealand, West Indies and Australia made it to the semifinals.  It was the only instance of the World Cup so far where no Asian team made it to the semifinal.

World Cup 1975: Finalist

Australia and West Indies then made it to the final by beating England and New Zealand respectively.  Favourites West Indies then beat Australia in the final at Lord’s by 17 runs to become the first World Cup winners.

The first edition of the World Cup, nonetheless, saw some exceptional batting efforts. New Zealand’s Glenn Turner led the list of the run-scoring chart, scoring a staggering 333 in just four games. In a tournament where no other batsmen could even cross the 250-run mark, Turner finished as the top-scorer by a huge margin.
