The Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals (DC-W) lost against the Sneh Rana-led Gujarat Giants (GUJ-W) by 11 runs in the 14th match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 16.

Delhi Capitals Women won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. The DC-W bowlers managed to reduce Gujarat Giants to 32/1 in the powerplay and it looked like the Sneh Rana-led side will once again get restricted to a low total.

However, the overseas stars Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner stitched together incredible 81 runs off 53 balls to help GUJ-W post 147/4 on the board.

Chasing the target, the dependable DC opening duo of Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma failed to build a good partnership. Marizanne Kapp fought well and scored 36 runs, but the wickets kept falling at the other end and DC-W were reduced to 100/8.

From the lower order, Arundhati Reddy batted very well and scored 25 runs off 17 balls, with 4 fours, and it looked like she will take her side past the finish line. However, it didn’t happen as Kim Garth cleaned Arundhati up in the 18th over. DC-W lost the last wicket on the 4th ball of the 19th over and got bundled out for 136.

We didn’t play to our potential tonight – Meg Lanning

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, DC-W captain Meg Lanning said that they didn’t play to their potential in the game against Gujarat Giants. She added that the bowlers did an incredible job in the match.

“We felt that if we bat out the overs, we could actually get over the line. Gujarat team bowled very well. We didn’t play to our potential tonight,” Meg Lanning said.

“Our bowlers did an excellent job and I think they were 20-25 short. We didn’t take that many wickets but we contained them quite well. With wickets in the back end, obviously they would score a bit. It is a good learning opportunity for us,” Meg Lanning added.

Meg Lanning was quite disappointed with her performance in the match.

“My shot to get out was poor. Playing across the line on a track where I should have played straight and two key run-outs. We lost momentum as we kept losing wickets but credit to Gujarat,” Meg Lanning said.

Meg Lanning further spoke about Gujarat Giants’ star performer Harleen Deol.

“(On Harleen Deol) We spoke a bit about her, she bowls a bit of off-spin and leg spin. She put the balls in the right areas and got the reward. Everyone has been busy so they will enjoy their time off tomorrow,” she said.
