Mumbai Indians Women defeated UP Warriorz in the eliminator to qualify for the final of WPL 2023. The team’s bowling coach and Indian bowling legend Jhulan Goswami lauded her team’s all-round performance in the match.
While batting first, Mumbai Indians Women started off steadily, scoring 70-odd runs in the first 10 overs. English all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt then started taking on the UP bowling, ending her innings at 72-off-38. Mumbai’s dominance stretched to their bowling as well, taking quick wickets in the first 10 overs. When it looked like Kiran Navgire is fighting back with 43-off-27, Issy Wong took the first hat-trick in WPL in the 13th over, essentially finishing the match right there. Warriorz’s innings ended in the 18th over with 110 runs.
MI posted a video of their bowling coach Jhulan Goswami summing up the team’s performance on Twitter. While speaking about her team’s batting, the ex-ace pacer said:
IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)
“Yastika (Bhatia) gave us a good, positive start. The way she started the innings, it set the momentum. Later on, Nat (Sciver-Brunt) took over and the best thing about Nat was that she played until the end. She’s one of the best all-rounders in the world… At the same time, there was a partnership with our captain (Harmanpreet Kaur), and then Amelia (Kerr)… Let’s not forget Pooja’s (Vastrakar) contribution towards the end. Those are the extra contributions that took us to 180+”
Discussing Mumbai’s dominant bowling performance, Jhulan Goswami said:
“I think the bowlers bowled really well on this wicket. They bowled straight, hitting the ball in the right areas. And Wongy (Issa Wong), was a special performance. Today, she took her first hat-trick. And the way she bowled was amazing… All the bowlers bowled really well. Saika (Ishaque) bowled a brilliant first over – a wicket maiden. And then Nat, Wongy, Hayley (Matthews). Jinti (Jintimani Kalita) bowled well today. Overall, it was a good performance.”
Highlighting the best thing about MI’s performance in the eliminator, Goswami noted how her team was able to bowl UP out.
MI-W will face DC-W in the final of WPL 2023

After finishing on the top of the league table, Delhi directly qualified for the finals, while the 2nd and 3rd placed teams played an eliminator to determine the second finalist.
DC and MI have faced off twice in WPL 2023 edition, winning one match each. Having finished 1st and 2nd on the league table, it is only fitting that their tie-breaker will also determine the league’s inaugural champion.
