UP Warriorz won the toss & opted to bowl first against MI Women in the Eliminator of WPL 2023. MI Women skipper Harmanpreet Kaur named an unchanged playing 11. UP Warriorz brought back Grace Harris into the side in place of Shabnim Ismail. Hayley Matthews & Yastika Bhatia got the team to a decent start. MI Women scored 46 runs in the power-play overs for the loss of 1 wicket where Hayley Matthews was looking threatening.

At the end of 8 overs, the MI Women’s score was 61-1 where Hayley Matthews’ score was 19 runs in 19 balls whereas Nat Sciver Brunt was on 15 runs in 11 balls. Deepti Sharma was bowling the 9th over and on the very first ball of the over, Deepti bowled a half-tracker outside leg stump where Hayley Matthews just went with the delivery & played a shot at long leg where Anjali Sarvani took a stunning catch.

The on-field umpires later referred the decision to 3rd umpire Ranjeev Sharma, who reversed the decision stating that the ball touched the ground. Several fans and cricket pundits questioned the decision of the third umpire and slammed him for the bizarre decision as many felt that the ball didn’t touch the ground and it was a clean catch. Even Harsha Bhogle on-air said that the catch taken by Anjali Sarvani was clean.

UP Warriorz were the ones who broke MI Women’s winning streak of 5 matches. UP Warriorz would be banking on the star all-rounder Grace Harris as the batter has the knack of changing the complexion of the match quickly. Skipper Alyssa Healy’s captaincy so far has been spot on where she hasn’t allowed the batters to rotate the strike.

MI Women would be aware of the fact that they have to post a challenging total of over 180 as UP Warriorz have got a long batting lineup. The pitch doesn’t seem to be on the slower side and there are chances that dew may come into action later in the game where defending won’t be easy.

As a watcher who doesn’t support any particular team, what has become obvious in the #WPL2023 is that it seems to have already been decided that MI will win the tournament.

The not out call on that catch was just the latest example.
