RCB Women captain Smriti Mandhana discussed the team’s underwhelming performance during WPL 2023 following a loss in their final league stage game against MI Women.
Winning the toss, Harmanpreet Kaur-led MI decided to field first. A solid bowling performance by the likes of Amelia Kerr (3/22), Nat Sciver-Brunt (2/24), and Issy Wong (2/26) helped them stop the Bangalore team to a meagre 125/9, with Richa Ghosh and Ellyse Perry being the top scorers with 29 each.

Despite stumbling a little following the powerplay, it always looked like a breezy chase for MI, who powered through to the target in the 17th over. Amelia Kerr was also the highest run-scorer for her team, scoring 31 not-out in what amounted to be an easy victory. Unsurprisingly, Kerr was announced the Player of the Match.
In the post-match conference, RCB captain Mandhana reflected upon her team’s disappointing season. Although, she did complement the performance of some of her players in today’s match.

“We tried to fight. Kanika bowled well. One of those days as a fielder when which of the ball goes in the air comes to you. We were below par today. We have a great team. We have a balanced team. Won’t say we don’t have a great team because we haven’t done well. We had some amazing players. The first four-five games didn’t go our way. My personal form wasn’t great. We didn’t get great starts. Sometimes things don’t go as you have planned. We will come back stronger next season. We have found some amazing youngsters in Shreyanka and Kanika. They have been fearless. Was pleasing to see as a skipper. Asha bowled very well too,” she said
Looking like favourites to win it all before the tournament started, they failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing the inaugural season of the WPL in fourth place.
MI jump to the top of the table
With the win in their eighth and final league game, MI-W have jumped to the top of the table in WPL 2023, having won six of their matches.
Having been on the top of the league table for much of the tournament’s running, Mumbai were pipped to the spot by DC following their last encounter Yesterday, which Delhi won.
DC now sit second on the table, with one match in hand. Due to their better Net Run Rate (NRR), if Meg Lanning’s team just defeats UP Warriorz in the last game of the league stage tonight, they will finish on the top of the points table, directly qualifying for the final of WPL 2023.
