With the league stage coming to an end, the results from today’s double-header fixtures from WPL 2023 have produced results which were more or less expected if we looked at the points table before. Delhi Capitals Women defeated UP Warriorz to secure the top spot in the league table and directly qualify for the final. They pipped Mumbai Indians Women from the top spot, who won their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore Women earlier today.
MI and UP will now face off in an eliminator for a chance to face Delhi in the final of WPL’s inaugural edition.
After winning the toss, Mumbai decided to bowl first against RCB. Player of the Match Amelia Kerr was the pick of the bowlers with the figures of 3/22. With MI restricting Smriti Mandhana’s team to 125/9.
Indians started their innings well, rocketing to 50 runs in the powerplay. But the innings hit rocky waters, as Harmanpreet Kaur’s side lost their top order in the next few overs. Kerr again came to the rescue, building a solid partnership with Pooja Vastrakar to take her team home.
The second game saw UP Warriorz getting off to a steady start. The run rate was a little slow when captain Alyssa Healy departed at the end of the 10th over. Despite that, UP fought through to the score of 138/6 in their 20 overs, with middle-order batter Tahlia McGrath scoring a quick 58-off-32.
A strong start by DC was followed by the innings hitting a roadblock around the end of the powerplay, but the Delhi franchise never looked like they were losing the game, chasing the target down in the 18th over.
