Sania Mirza, a tennis icon who has been an elite athlete for over two decades, has been appointed as a mentor by the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCB-W) for the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL).
Although she does not have much knowledge about cricket, Sania believes that her experience as a professional athlete can assist the women cricketers of RCB in handling the mental aspects of the game. The WPL will commence with the first match between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team, captained by Indian opener Smriti Mandhana, will begin their quest for their first Women’s Premier League (WPL) title with a match against the Delhi Capitals on Sunday. As a mentor for RCB, Sania Mirza’s role will be to assist them in achieving their goal.

Sania stated that having been involved in individual sports, she was accustomed to handling photo shoots, media attention, and other similar matters on her own. Therefore, she feels that she can offer valuable guidance to the RCB women cricketers.

It is typical to feel pressure, but Sania believes that one must learn to manage it, ignore distractions, and stay focused. She added that the Indian media can be challenging to deal with, but it’s all about knowing how to handle the noise and stay calm under pressure.
“I know nothing about cricket. I thought (when I was made mentor) what I am going to do, what am I going to talk to the girls. I recently retired, last week actually. So I was thinking what’s my next step in life? So my next step was to try and help women athletes around and in India, In any sport, to help with the mental aspect of things which I have been through for the last 20 years,” she said in a video shared on RCB’s Twitter handle.
Sania emphasized that struggles and difficulties are an integral part of every athlete’s life and reminded the RCB players of the reasons why they chose to pursue cricket.
She stated that struggles are present in every aspect of life, including sports. Sania reflected on her own experience, sharing how she used to practice on cow dung-based courts without proper coaching guidance. Sania further stated that real champions are those who continue to strive and emerge victorious even when faced with adverse circumstances.
