The Mumbai Indians (MI) bought some of the biggest match winners in women’s cricket at the auction for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that the Mumbai Indians have the best overseas player combination among the teams in the upcoming season of the WPL.

The Mumbai-based franchise has invested heavily in all-rounders in the auction, like their men’s team. They bought 17 players, including six overseas players with the available a total purse of Rs 12 crore. England all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt was the most expensive buy, and they bought Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur for Rs. 1.8 crore, all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar for Rs. 1.9 crore.

Nat Sciver Is Outstanding – Aakash Chopra

On the “Aakashvani” show on JioCinema, Aakash Chopra said that Mumbai Indians have a strong overseas contingent and highlighted Nat Sciver, who has been in brilliant form in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

“I see their overseas contingent as this team’s strength, which might be a common thread for all teams. They have Amelia Kerr, Nat Sciver, Hayley Matthews, Heather Graham, Chloe Tryon and Isabelle Wong.”

“You might remember Nat Sciver now because you are seeing her performances in the ongoing T20 World Cup and you are saying, ‘Wow, what a player.’ Everyone knows that she is absolutely stellar – middle-order batter and some seam-up bowling along with that. Nat Sciver is outstanding.”

Sciver-Brunt, MI’s only overseas player to be picked for more than a crore, scored 176 runs at an average of 88.00 in the ongoing T20 World Cup in South Africa. Amelia Kerr was bought for Rs 1 crore, while the other four foreign players were purchased together for Rs 1.3 crore.

The former Indian opener believes that the Mumbai Indians’ overseas lineup, which includes all-rounders and fast bowlers, has covered all bases.

“They got one quality player at base price – that’s Hayley Matthews, and Amelia Kerr for only a crore. They have got fast bowling in the form of Isabelle Wong, a spin-bowling all-rounder in the form of Tryon. Hayley Matthews, Amelia Kerr and Natalie Sciver are all-rounders and Heather Graham is there as well.”

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 is set to be played between March 4 and 26. All 22 games in the inaugural edition will be played at Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
